What is the problem with Petroleum Diesel Fuel:
- We are totally dependant on fossil energy for fuel, electricity, fertilizers, pesticides & materials.
- We have consumed half the worlds crude oil deposits. Crude oil is projected to be US$75 barrel, climbing up to US$300 barrel. At current consumption crude oil supplies will be depleted by 2040.
- For every 4 litres of petrol produced and then burnt in a car, 10 kilograms of Carbon Dioxide are released into the atmosphere, which in turn contributes to Global Warming. The level of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere today is higher that it has been for 160,000 years.
How will Global Warming effect Australia’s Environment:
- Increase in Droughts: NSW and WA are expected to be 20% drier by 2030, and 60% drier by 2070, with similar drying trends in South Australia and Victoria. Resulting in more severe bushfires, longer and more intense droughts.
- Increase in Temperature: Less frosts, higher evaporation rates, faster plant maturity, shorter plant growing seasons, 3 degrees C reduce wheat yields up to 30%, increase in CO2, rising sea levels and changes in storm surges, increased risk of insect borne diseases, more intense summer heat, Increase extreme weather events.
What does the Government Think about Biofuels:
The Victorian Government is keen to position Victoria to take advantage of industry development opportunities that may be available from the potential economic, social and environmental benefits of biofuels.
Developing and encouraging the uptake of alternative transport fuels and technologies has an important part to play in:
- advancing sustainability
- reducing reliance on oil imports and securing Victoria’s energy future
- delivering more high quality jobs and thriving, innovative industries across Victoria
- reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
How is the Victorian Government supporting the biofuels industry?
The Victorian Government has developed a biofuels road map and action plan. Driving Growth - A Road Map and Action Plan for the Development of the Victorian Biofuels Industry identifies ways to increase investment and expand the biofuels market in Victoria. It also assists in overcoming barriers facing the biofuels industry such as regulations, marketing and distribution.
